In a volleyball game, there are mainly two scoring methods. One is called side-out scoring, while the other is called rally scoring.

VOLLEYBALL SCORING METHOD: SIDEOUT

This scoring method might be confusing for some because in this method serving teams aims to score points, whereas receiving team strives harder to get the serve rather than scoring points. Once they get the serve then, they can score points. The team that loses serve must win a rally to bring back the possession of the ball or get the serve.

When a team wins a rally and gets back the serve, it is called “side out.”

RALLY SCORING

In this volleyball scoring method, a team who wins the rally is awarded a point. In contradiction to the side-out scoring method, teams do not need to be serving to score points. They can also be receiving to score points. Moreover, after scoring and winning a rally, they become serving apart from getting points.

Moreover, Olympic volleyball scoring follows the method of rally scoring, where either of the two teams can score points, and the scoring team is not required to be the serving team, which means receiving team can also score points and become serving at the same time unlike side out volleyball scoring method. Similarly, there are five sets, and the winner, a team who wins 3 out of five sets, will be the winner. Furthermore, to win a set, teams must score two points more.

OLYMPIC BEACH VOLLEYBALL

This type of volleyball is slightly different from others as there are three sets rather than five; moreover, each set has 21 scores, unlike other formats where the score in sets are 25 and 15. In case when the third set is played, the team which scores 15 points will be the match-winner.

HOW ARE POINTS AWARDED?

In volleyball, scoring points are awarded when a team player hits the ball crossing the line and is touched on the ground, i.e., the opponent team fails to hit back the ball before touching the ground.

In Olympic beach volleyball, the same volleyball scoring methods are followed. In the side-out method, the team can win a rally and get possession of the ball; once they become a serving team, they will strive for scoring points, which means that a team cannot secure points unless they get possession of the ball.

Similarly, in the rally-scoring method, a team can score points and get the ball’s possession at the same time without fulfilling the condition of being served first, unlike the side-out scoring method.
